iPhone 17 release date, features, rumors

The iPhone 16 series is expected to be released in the second half of this year. But rumors are already circulating about the next generation of Apple’s iPhone lineup – the iPhone 17. The rumored iPhone 17 series is anticipated to have a refreshed design, upgraded front-facing cameras, and a smaller Dynamic Island, along with other enhancements. Let’s dive into what we know so far about the release date, pricing, and rumored features for the upcoming iPhone 17 series.

iPhone 17 Release Date

Apple is known for its consistent release schedule, with new iPhones typically launched in September. Following this trend, the iPhone 17 series is expected to be released between mid-September and early October 2025. The announcement of the new phones will likely be a few weeks before the actual release date. While exact dates are not yet confirmed, this time frame aligns with Apple’s traditional pattern, making it a likely bet for the next-generation iPhone release.

iPhone 17 Expected Price

Apple is known for maintaining a consistent pricing structure for its new iPhones. So it’s likely that the iPhone 17 will be priced similarly to previous models. Although the exact pricing for the iPhone 17 hasn’t been confirmed, here’s what we know about the starting prices for the entry-level models of the last three iPhones:

  • iPhone 15 (128GB): $799
  • iPhone 14 (128GB): $799
  • iPhone 13 (128GB): $79

Given this pattern, it’s reasonable to assume that the iPhone 17’s base model will also start around $799. We also need to keep in mind price variations depending on screen size, storage capacity, and other features. As always, the Pro versions are expected to be more expensive due to their additional premium features.

iPhone 17 Rumored Features

The upcoming series is expected to include a variety of models, potentially offering a choice for everyone. The anticipated lineup consists of the iPhone 17, 17 Plus, 17 Pro, and 17 Pro Max. There’s also speculation about an Ultra model, which could introduce even more advanced features and premium design elements.

Let’s see what some other features might be.

iPhone 17 Slim Rumor

A new rumor suggests that the 2025 iPhone might feature a “Slim” model instead of a Plus model. This information comes from Jeff Pu, an analyst at Haitong International Securities, who mentioned in an investor note (as reported by 9to5Mac) that the new Slim model would have a 6.6-inch display, slightly smaller than the 6.7-inch iPhone 15 Plus.

However, another reliable source, Ross Young, wrote in an X post that the display could be even smaller, at 6.55 inches. The fact that two respected leakers are discussing a Slim model suggests there’s a strong possibility this could become a reality.

iPhone 17 Camera Rumors

The iPhone 17 series will bring at least three significant camera upgrades.

First, according to MacRumors, the telephoto camera on the 17 Pro Max is expected to see a major resolution increase, going from 12 megapixels on the iPhone 15 to 48 megapixels. This high-resolution telephoto camera is likely exclusive to the Pro Max model for now.

Second, the same report from MacRumors suggests that the front-facing selfie camera on all models will double in resolution. This is a shift from 12 megapixels on the iPhone 15 to 24 megapixels.

Lastly, noted Apple analyst Kuo Ming-Chi points out that the camera lenses on the 17 series will be made with 6 elements. This upgrade is expected to enhance image quality, particularly in low-light conditions.

Design Changes

Jeff Pu indicates that the base iPhone 17 will feature a 6.1-inch screen. And the Pro version will have a 6.3-inch display.  The iPhone 17 Pro Max will come with a 6.9-inch screen. These screen sizes align with the expected dimensions for the iPhone 16 lineup. These suggest that only the iPhone 17 Slim might experience a noticeable change in screen size.

Continuing with design changes, the 2025 Pro Max will likely be clad in titanium. This will be quite similar to the iPhone 15 Pro Max. However, the other three models are expected to feature a “more complex” aluminum design. This could be seen as a step down for the iPhone 17 Pro. And it’s currently made with titanium like its predecessor, the iPhone 15 Pro.

Face ID Changes

Industry analyst Ross Young from Display Supply Chain Consultants suggests that the iPhone 17 Pro models will change how Face ID is implemented. Instead of having a notch at the top of the screen, the Face ID sensors will be embedded under the display. The selfie camera will still have a cutout, but by moving the Face ID sensors under the screen, Apple is getting closer to a completely notch-free front on future iPhones.

LTPO OLED Displays

Another rumor hints that the entire iPhone 17 series will include LTPO OLED displays. This is the first time that Apple’s high-end 120Hz ProMotion technology with 1Hz always-on functionality will be available across all models. While this feature has been exclusive to the current Pro variants, the next generation might bring this premium display tech to every iPhone 17 model.

Increased Megapixels and RAM

The same report suggests that the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Slim will come with 8GB of RAM and either an A18 or A19 chipset, while the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max are expected to feature 12GB of RAM with an A19 Pro chipset. To put this into perspective, the current standard iPhones have 6GB of RAM, and the Pro models have 8GB. Rumors about the iPhone 16 series indicate that all four phones will come with 8GB of RAM.

Keep in mind that these are early rumors, so it’s best to take them with a grain of salt. More information is likely to surface in the coming months.
